You are either a fan of the Transformers movies or not. If you are a fan, it is pointless to tell you the films are no good because you will go see it anyway and enjoy it. If you are not a fan, there is no reason to recommend the film to you. They are not good movies but Michael Bay releases films that entertain the franchise’s fan base. He is very successful at making blockbusters that make a lot of money. Moreover, they generate significant, additional advertising money by injecting a lot of not so subtle product placements in the film. As such, Bay will continue to make these movies despite universals scorn from film critics for his work. In my opinion, only the first film is a good movie. The two sequels in the first trilogy are bad movies but are very entertaining because of great action sequences with great special effects synced to great musical scores and a lot of funny moments. Nevertheless, I agree with the criticisms of Transformers: Age of Extinction. First, it is way too long at 2 hours and 45 minutes. Unfortunately, it is lengthy because there are too many storylines and most of them are pointless. I would also have a difficult time fully explaining the main plot and the subplots. On the other hand, I appreciate the film trying to tie back to the original trilogy and the consequences of the Battle of Chicago in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Regardless, the plot is a mess. The story arcs in the first trilogy may not be good but they are easy to follow. It is difficult to watch a long movie when the plot is not intriguing and confusing. Moreover, I feel a true diehard Transformers fan, who knows the background and the story arcs of the Transformers universe outside of the films, would enjoy the Easter eggs placed in the film. However, I am not one of those fans so I am confused about a lot of the events in the film since they are not developed well enough for a regular moviegoer to understand. In addition, the movie is introducing a completely new cast. It may be another reason it is long. However, the development of the characters is not done well. Similarly, the story lines of the villains are scattered. There are technically three or four villains. However, they are not developed well enough and seem more like four side villains. When you have four villains, it probably means you do not have one good one. The lack of one main villain to center the story arcs around is another reason the plot is confusing. In all, there are human antagonists, a secret villain that fans of the Transformers fan base will like, and an intergalactic bounty hunter. The protagonists, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and Tessa Yeager (Nicola Peltz) are also decent characters. Their complicated father-daughter relationship is entertaining. Nevertheless, it drags on and could have been trimmed down. Overall, the cast is comprised of a good group of actors (e.g. Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Kelsey Grammar). Unfortunately, I do not think they are given much to work with in this movie to excel like they should. I did not care for what happened to any of the human characters. From my perspective, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) and Bumblebee are still the best characters in the series. Prime is an idealist but the events of this film force him to question his own beliefs. It is the only serious element of the movie. Bumblebee is still a lot of fun as the childish, rebellious Autobot with big guns.
Like the last two films, this movie floods the screen with too many robots without any character development. They make for visually appealing battle scenes but poor storytelling. I could not tell you the names of most of the new Autobots without looking them up. The new one I like is Hound (John Goodman). He is a tough fighter that always has a cigar in his mouth. Another new Autobot is Drift. He is voiced by Ken Watanabe. I am a big fan of Watanabe as an actor with his roles such as Katsumoto in the Last Samurai and Ra’s Al Guhl’s decoy in Batman Begins. I recognized his voice immediately. Drift is an Autobot resembling a samurai. It makes no sense but a lot of things in this movie franchise do not. For true Transformers fans, they will also get a kick out of the inclusion of the Dinobots. Unfortunately, their story is very weak and almost non-existent. They are in the film only for action sequences. One of the aspects of the first trilogy I enjoyed is the collaboration with the Autobots and the military. I really like the idea that our military can hurt the Decepticons and are not solely relying on the Autobots to save them. With the amount of money our country spends on the military, it should be able to hurt some alien robots. However, Age of Extinction moves away from this formula from the first trilogy. As one of the consequences of the Battle of Chicago, the military is forced to end its alliance with the Autobots and are not a part of this film. I enjoyed Captain William Lennox (Josh Duhamel) and Segeant Epps (Tyrese Gibson) leading the human forces against the Decepticons. They are a lot of fun to watch. Unfortunately, there are no such characters in this movie. Moreover, I missed the military supporting the Autobot’s assault against the antagonists of the film. From my perspective, watching F-22 Raptor fighter jets in action always improves a movie. Another part of the Transformers films I really enjoy is the amazing scores Steve Jablonsky and Hans Zimmer have put together. While the music for the Age of Extinction is not bad, I definitely like the scores for the first trilogy better. For these reasons, the original trilogy is more fun and entertaining than this latest sequel. Below are more specific thoughts I have on the plot and new cast.
As I note above, there are just too many storylines that do not go anywhere. For example, the opening scene shows alien ships causing the extinction of the Dinosaurs 65 million years ago. There is no narration of the event so I assumed that the film would center the plot on explaining it and developing the story of the Dinobots. Unfortunately, it does not do much with either. The reason for the extinction of the Dinosaurs is an important part of the plot but is only a minor subplot. In addition, the movie does nothing to develop the origin of the Dinobots. They do not say one word and we learn very little about them. They are in the movie just to fight. On the other hand, I do like that the film tries to link back to the first trilogy. Key story arcs center on the consequences of the Battle of Chicago. Naturally, there is a lot of wreckage left after the devastation of the battle. Accordingly, Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci), the head of Kinetic Solutions Incorporated (“KSI”) is trying to reverse engineer the technology of the Transformers. Tucci is a very good actor. I am a fan of his work, especially his role as the over the top Caesar Flickerman in the Hunger Games films. He does a decent job with Joyce. The character is a very enthusiastic inventor. While he is not as exaggerated as Flickerman, he is eccentric and has some ridiculous moments in the film for comic relief. He is also arrogant. He believes he has improved on the technology of the Transformers. Accordingly, he states that the Autobots are no longer needed as he has made them obsolete. Of course, his perspective reminds me of a quote from Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should”. You definitely get the feeling that Joyce does not really understand the dangers of experimenting with alien technology. Although Megatron was killed in the last film, his presence is felt. Since Joyce is toying with a lot of Decepticon technology, there is definitely a fear that Joyce is unknowingly and accidentally initiating one of Megatron’s apocalyptic schemes or summoning a new evil. Overall, Joyce is a decent character with an intriguing storyline. There is a case to be made that he is a villain. From my perspective, he is an anti-hero. In the end, he has good intentions but his ambition and arrogance blinds him from realizing the folly of his ways. His actions leads to the arrival of the secret villain in this film, who true Transformers fan boys will love.
Another good character is Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammar). He is a CIA agent who forms Cemetary Wind. Officially, his group is formed to hunt down the fugitive Decepticons that are still loose on Earth. However, Attinger sees all Transformers as the enemy. He does not differentiate. There are no good aliens or bad aliens. There are only humans versus the aliens. He secretly hunts the Autobots too without informing the government. After the devastation of Chicago caused the Decepticon invasion, it is not crazy that some individuals would take the stance that all aliens need to be eliminated before the planet is safe. As a viewer, we know the Autobots are the good guys. In real life, I believe that there would be an outcry from the public in regards to human beings being caught in the crossfire of an alien grudge match. Attinger’s plan is executed by his lead in the field, Titus Welliver (James Savoy). Welliver lost a sister in the Battle of Chicago. As such, he feels no sympathy for any Transformer regardless of whether he is an Autobot or a Decepticon. His personal loss links the film to the first trilogy. While I do not condone his actions, it is very human to want revenge. Of course, Grammar is an excellent actor and always has presence on screen. He is the strongest government character in the Transformers series since Secretary of Defense John Keller (Jon Voight) in the first film. I really liked Keller as a character because he was a strong, decisive, and charismatic leader. Since the first film, Bay elected to portray the United States civilian leadership negatively with incompetent, annoying characters that hinder the efforts of the Autobots. Similarly in this film, he includes a Chief of Staff who is a complete idiot that gets pushed around by Attinger. On the other hand, Bay films a significant part of this movie in China and clearly made a deal with the government to portray it in a positive light. It is obvious when Hong Kong is under attack, some side characters proclaim that the Central Government [of mainland China] will save them, and the Central Government decisively and firmly orders the military to defend Hong Kong at all costs. This portrayal is in sharp contrast of the pathetic appearance of the United States leadership. Accordingly, I like Attinger as a character but wish he was a good guy who played a similar role as Keller.
Another reason Attinger is important to the plot is his involvement with the intergalactic bounty hunter, Lockdown (Mark Ryan). Attinger coordinates with Lockdown to hunt down the Autobots under the thought that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Attinger is also working with KSI and Joyce. He believes he is doing what he feels is right for his country. However, he feels underpaid and underappreciated as a government employee. He sees an opportunity to become wealthy by securing additional alien resources and technology for Joyce’s research in exchange for a minority interest in KSI. One of the items Joyce needs to further his work is a “Seed”, which Lockdown possesses. Lockdown is after Optimus Prime. Accordingly, Attinger is smart enough to strike a bargain with Lockdown. In exchange for his aid in the form of information and manpower to capture Optimus, Lockdown will provide a “Seed”. Similar to the rest of Joyce’s research, he is also naïve about the dangers of the “Seed”. Attinger is the second true human villain in the film franchise. The first was Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey) in Dark of the Moon. Gould’s motivations never made sense. He is one of the wealthiest people in the world but is willing to sell out humanity to be a pet and lead slave for the Decepticons. Even if he believes the Decepticons will win the war, he should have looked for the first opportunity to betray them if there is a chance to tip the battle in humanity’s favor. Instead, Gould is fully committed to the Decepticon cause. In addition, Gould is apparently the head of the largest accounting firm in the United States and used its power as accountants to help the Decepticons. I am very familiar with accounting. Rest assured, accountants are not in position to cause the apocalypse. In contrast, Attinger’s motivations make perfect sense. He wants to eliminate all Transformers since they are all threats. Moreover, he is greedy and wants a golden parachute from a corporation. He is also a CIA agent and in an actual position of power that could affect an outcome of a war with aliens. Returning to Lockdown, the design of the character is great. He looks intimidating and menacing. Since he is a bounty hunter, he is hired to hunt down and capture Optimus Prime. The film teases the identity or identities of his employer(s). Diehard fans probably know what or who the references are implying. However, I have no idea. It is one of the questions that kept me interested in the plot but it never got answered. Obviously, they are setting up the sequel to provide the answers.
The new human protagonist in the film is Cade Yeager who is played by Mark Wahlberg. Shia LeBeouf is fine in the first film. However, he gets tiring over the course of three films. Wahlberg is definitely an improvement. He has had an excellent career playing tough guys. Instead of LeBeouf running around and constantly screaming during the battles, it is more enjoyable to see Wahlberg in his place and bravely fighting alongside the Autobots. On the other hand, Cade is also an immature father who has never grown up. As a result, his teenage daughter Tessa Yeager (Nicola Peltz) acts more like the adult in their relationship and takes care of her father. Nicola Peltz is definitely a pretty girl. She is younger and has a more innocent look than her predecessor lead female actresses, Megan Fox and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. As such, this film moves from the protagonist and his love interest angle to the protagonist and his daughter angle. Since Megan Fox will always be the best love interest in this franchise for me, I did not mind the switch. The change also cuts down on the lewd humor. Cade is an inventor and good with electronics. However, he has banked their future on him inventing something great and getting rich off of it. Since all his ideas have flopped so far, they are in debt and about to lose their farm. Naturally, Cade is also an overprotective father who does not allow Tessa to date and enforces strict curfews on her. He is a former lady’s man who impregnated Tessa’s mother when they were teenagers. Accordingly, he is tormented by the idea of men out there chasing his daughter and acting the way he did when he was younger. For all these reasons, they have a contentious but loving relationship. It is difficult for Tessa to take orders from an immature father. Nevertheless, she loves him and knows he needs her to survive. The two characters have some very entertaining disputes during the film. However, the film could have developed the relationship more efficiently as I thought it was too drawn out and took up too much time. Of course, Tessa has a secret boyfriend, Shane Dyson (Jack Reynor), who meets a disapproving Cade in the heat of battle. Conveniently, Shane is a race car driver that helps them as they run from all the antagonists in the film. The snarky and antagonistic exchanges between Shane and Cade are very funny, especially when they are being chased or are in the middle of a battle.
The one serious part of the plot is Optimus’s reaction to human brutality towards his Autobots. Optimus is the eternal optimist and the ultimate idealist. However, even his resolve is tested by the savage nature of how Attinger’s Cementary Wind is hunting down the Autobots. There are a couple of scenes that depict the merciless slaughter of a couple of Autobots. As such, Optimus’s natural response is anger. After all the Autobots have done for Earth in the movies, humans still try to eliminate the Autobots. It is a tough pill for Optimus to swallow and causes him to question his beliefs. The situation brings me back to the first film when Ironhide questions Optimus’s decision not to save Bumblebee because the operation could not be accomplished without harming humans: “Why are we fighting to save the humans? They’re a primitive and violent race.” In many ways, Ironhide is absolutely correct. Human beings have committed unthinkable, barbaric acts of violence against other human beings. The Holocaust and World War II in the past as well as the crimes against humanity in Darfur in the present are examples of terrible things human beings have done. When you read about or hear those stories of evils committed by man, it is sickening and forces you to question humanity. Accordingly, Optimus has to reconsider whether humanity is worth fighting for and defending. On the other hand, we are also capable of very touching gestures and beautiful accomplishments. Having both darkness and light is a part of human nature. We have the freedom to decide which path we go down. In the first film, Optimus observes that the good he has seen from us. Moreover, we are a young species that is still developing. He concludes that every race deserves freedom and a chance to decide its own fate. As a result, he leads his Autobots to defend that right for humans. Again, he needs to reevaluate that conclusion in Age of Extinction. While he will not wage a war against the human race, he can also elect to round up the remaining Autobots and leave the planet so we can fend for ourselves. In addition, the brutality against his kind has crossed the line and even he needs to consider whether to break his rule against killing humans and kill the person or persons responsible. The film does a good job bringing up these questions but I feel its answer is lacking.
Overall, Transformers: Age of Extinction is not a good movie. It is even weaker than the first two sequels. It is too long. The plot is too confusing with too many story lines that go nowhere. It has a good cast who are entertaining. However, they are not developed well and I did not really care if any of the human characters lived or died. There is a lot of flash but no soul to this movie. It is definitely a movie I would advise against for any moviegoer who is not a Transformers fan. Even for fans of the franchise, I would hesitate to recommend it. Regardless, I know Transformers fans will go see it anyway and be entertained for 3 hours. You know the drill. Set your expectations low. Shut off the thinking part of your brain. Enjoy Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and a whole lot of other killer robots duke it out with great special effects.
