New Girl: Great Just Got Greater

New Girl has been great.  It came out of the blocks with maybe a little too much Zooey Deschanel playing unassuming and unaware, but it quickly adjusted and spotlighted the hilarious ensemble of guys on the show.  The result is hilariousness.  But for those who have been watching from the beginning, they also remember a keystone to that male ensemble, by the name of Damon Wayans Jr.  Now at first Lamorne Morris, aka Winston, seemed like a forceful replacement, and kind of bugged me.  But I give credit to the writers for developing him as a legit character, and not simply maintaining him as the “token” friend with no particularly noteworthy traits.  Winston is one of my favorite characters on the show now.  He’s an underlying bit of absurdity that everyone seems to miss because of their day to day drama. It’s great.  But if you watched New Girl this week (spoiler alert), than you know Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) made a big return.  Now I was both excited and concerned for this to happen.  I was a bit worried a network television show wouldn’t have the breath of space to handle two full bodied minority characters.  I certainly hoped they could, but I was skeptical, given the history of “token” minority characters on television.  Well, you can cast my concerns aside, cause it was amazing.  Damon Wayans Jr. fell right in line with the rest of the cast.  He was originally signed on for only 6 episodes, but his first re-appearance was so brilliant, they extended it for the whole season.  This is awesome news.  The show’s trajectory, while already pointed up, just increased the scale for which it should continue to get better and better.  But being the greedy bastard that I am, I say why stop there.

The new New Girl

If you were unaware, the reason Damon Wayans Jr. had to be written off New Girl in the first place, was because he took on a not so different role on the hugely underrated show Happy Endings.  At one point Happy Endings and New Girl played the part of the perfect comedy 1, 2 punch when they were airing back to back.  I loved Happy Endings, and arguably, Happy Endings found its stride much quicker than New Girl.  The ensemble was great, and the story telling was even handed.  Remember back in the day when people could only imagine what it would be like for the likes of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade to team up, and then one day we were granted that imaginary scenario, when Lebron uttered the now infamous words that he was taking his talents to south beach.  Well I hated that day, but if Fox could pull off a similar type of acquisition and the entire ensemble of Happy Endings took their talents to New Girl, I think that would be amazing.  But how would one show handle so many personalities?  Well, listen up Fox, I have a great idea.  You love doing “unique” things for television (look no further than the oversized tablet war room you’ve created on Fox News).  You also seem to be making a strong push as the best channel for comedy  for people who don’t need laugh tracks to tell them when to laugh (cough** CBS viewers).  Well, what if you were also the first channel to have a two part comedy show.  What’s better than getting loads of viewers on Tuesday to watch New Girl?  Getting loads of Viewers on Tuesday and Thursday, to watch New Girl.  Over the next season you could slowly integrate the actors from Happy Endings as fringe characters.  They could be the few cool people Coach met while he was dating his previous girlfriend.  Then eventually you start having two episodes a week where the first episode mainly centers around the New Girl ensemble while still having some good cameos from the other guys, and then the second episode being centered around the now defunct Happy Endings ensemble, again with a dash of cameos.  The setup of Coach and Schmidt being roommates is a perfect liaison between the two.  Some characters could have longer running cameo arcs within the others group, and some might just make short cameos as a punchline to a joke.  Look I doubt this will ever happen, but hey a man can dream.  I mean could you imagine Adam Pally and Jake Johnson having a rivalry over something completely absurd over a 4 episode arc.  The possibilities are endless. Think about it Fox.  That’s all I’m asking is to think about it.
