NFL Notes: Week 7

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars

Wow, week seven was brutal.  A lot of teams lost a lot of starters. And with that a lot teams ended they’re run for the playoffs and started they’re run for the number one draft pick. The only upside by all of this is that the chance to see Tebow just increased tenfold. Let’s see what else is noteworthy.

The Broncos are humans

Now I know I pretty much called the Broncos being a lock to beat the Colts.  Honestly they rolled the red carpet out for Peyton.  I assumed it could only be helpful for him.  But I will take solace in the fact that in my offseason minority report I did call the Colts being good this season.  Sure a lot of credit is given to Andrew Luck, and he does deserve a ton of credit.  But I noted that the Colts had 5 starters in their offense drafted in the class (Now make that 6).  That sort of natural chemistry is rare.  They’ll probably win the division. But the real story is the mortal Broncos.  I think the Cowboys set the table for the rest of the league offensively on how to attack the Broncos and I now think the Colts created a blueprint on how to get at them defensively.  I still think the Broncos are the best team in the league, but they are much more beatable than one would’ve thought.

Delayed Expectations

The Packers and the Niners got the notice the season was starting a few weeks late.  I think for both teams there were different reasons why that might’ve happened.  I honestly think the Niners kept the shackles on Kaepernick for the first few weeks of the season.  I think we’re seeing a new strategy on how to handle mobile quarterbacks.  I think it’s a bright move.  You barely use them in the preseason, then when the regular season starts, keep them in the pocket and protected and slowly remove the restraints.  Now you increase their chance of finish the season healthy.  For Green Bay, it’s probably more about the young running back finding his rhythm.  I think you’ll see Aaron Rogers continue to trend up in performance as the season moves on.

Kansas City… Really?

Alright I was wrong.  I really thought KC would be the disappointment of the season.  I still don’t think their the best team in the league but they are really good.  I just can’t see them making it through the playoffs to go to the Super Bowl.  I still think they’ll have trouble with some of the top flight offenses in the league as Alex Smith can not lead an offense to more than 20 points.  He just can’t.  But regardless Andy Reid is making a compelling argument for coach of the year.

Surprise Super Bowl

Usually every year either an AFC team or an NFC team will make a surprise run to the Super Bowl.  I think on the AFC side you have to look at the Colts for this right now.  They’re young, scrappy, and have a really good Quarterback.  But on the NFC side I’m really thinking it’s the Cowboys.  Dallas is playing pretty damn good right now with a lot of injuries. Which with their division they should have some time to heal and still be in front to win the NFC East.  Also wouldn’t the Tony Romo story only make sense to win the Super Bowl finally in New York. I don’t know a boy can dream.

Great Coaching

I couldn’t write this column without at mentioning the Jets.  I talked a ton last week so I’ll keep it short.  Rex Ryan is doing the most, with almost the least of anyone.  No offense to the Jets but they do not have a lot of talent. It’s simply astonishing to see them playing and winning.  Sure they have been on the receiving end of some fortunate situations, but let’s not pretend like we didn’t think they’d be 0 and 7 at this point.  Kudos to you Rex.  Kudos.

Week Ahead

There really aren’t any close matchups on the schedule. The best game on paper is the Cowboys verse the Lions.  The Lions are only good because of Calvin Johnson. I think the Cowboys take this game.  The rest of the games are really just a good opportunity to see who might be pretenders.  Most of the favorites should win fairly easily but I’m sure a few will lose and for those few teams I’ll take it as a sign they’re not serious about making a run.  Oh and if they Jets win this weekend I’ll begin to think about putting them in the irrational, improbable run category.  The Super Bowl is in New York, I’m just saying.

Injuries Abound

Sam Bradford is most likely out for the season, same with Doug Martin and Reggie Wayne.  For St. Louis, some people are calling for Tim Tebow.  But I have a better idea that can possibly help all teams involved.  The Redskins would get Vincent Jackson and Vick Ballard, St. Louis would get Kirk Cousins, the Bucaneers would get Jared Cook and Roy Helu Jr., and the Colts would get Leonard Hankerson.  Tell me who doesn’t do that trade. And for good measure the Bucs sign Tebow, because I do want to see him play again.
