Jerry Seinfeld: Always a Step Ahead

Comedians-in-Cars-Getting-Coffee

So I caught up on Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad is still 3 weeks away.  What is a human supposed to do.  I generally only watch 2-3 shows at a given time, because I really don’t have the free time to watch something every night.  Also I hate sitting and just flipping channels.  It’s mind numbing to me.  That being said it makes me a perfect candidate for binge watching.  It’s cool, all the kids are doing it.  So with this hiatus of television in my schedule I was looking for something a little lighter than the usual dark, anti-hero stuff that’s all the rave (ssshh…. we have a podcast coming about the whole rise in anti-heroes).  Partly cause it’s summer, I need to relax, and partly cause I needed a palette cleanser for the dark and brooding show that is Game of Thrones, so I can fully taste the evilness and despair in Breaking Bad.  This is where Seinfeld comes in.  Not the sitcom, though that show was brilliant and really would make for one hell of a palette cleanser to anything on TV.  No, in an amazing feat Jerry Seinfeld has found a new niche to conquer.  For being an elder statesmen of the comedy world, he seemingly has done better than most to conquer the internet.  He has that one site that indexes all his appearances on TV for your viewing pleasure.  But it’s his most recent endeavor that has my attention.  It’s a new show that just started last year that he’s made just for the interwebs.  To call it a show might be a strong word, but to call it just internet clips would be putting it way too lightly. It’s the novella of shows.  Oh man, where are my manners, the show is called “Comedians in Cars getting Coffee”.  And really the title says it all. Each episode opens with Jerry, who is very knowledgeable in cars, describing the special edition, or vintage, or classic car he might be driving that day.  It’s not a rule, but he does try to match the personalities of the comedians he’s picking up with the car. For instance he picked up Carl Reiner in a Rolls Royce. And when he did pick up the man who’s always in a suit, it just seemed superbly fitting.

Now back to the idea of calling this a novella.  I think Jerry Seinfeld is on to something.  It strikes that perfect balance of long enough, and yet not too long so that I want more.  And just because it’s not the longest show to watch, doesn’t mean it doesn’t pack a meaty punch.  Among the quips and jabs these legends and upcoming stars of comedy tend to drop a few nuggets of wisdom.  An example is how I avoided watching the Michael Richards episode cause to be honest I still wasn’t sure how I felt about him.  But when I watched and witnessed him bring up his elephant in the room on his own and talk with such regret, you get the sense it really was just a guy who made a mistake.  I’m not saying I’m his biggest fan all of a sudden, but that tinge I was getting from watching the sitcom Seinfeld after that ordeal is now gone. And for his sake I hope he does stand up at least one more time. In the end the showella (novella + show) shows the comedians in a light you don’t normally get to see them in.  Their switch is turned off as much as it possibly can be (seems they can never turn it completely off) and just genuinely happy to be catching up with a friend.  The showella tends to make me want to go out and start just grabbing coffee with my friends more often, which I’ve started doing as a result. And really you can’t ask for a better side effect.  So whether you’re needing a wake-me-up before Breaking Bad comes back, or you need an after dinner pick-me-up after the hefty meal that was Game of Thrones, I’d say there’s never a bad time for a good coffee.

Here’s a link to the show’s website where you can watch all the episode absolutely free. Seinfeld, he fucking awesome right:
