Run The Jewels

I already hyped this album last week, but it just got released yesterday.  I’ll remind everyone that this album is absolutely free.  There’s no better deal than that.  But if it wasn’t, would this album be worth getting?  I guess that’s the all important question.

With a summer drenched in big name hip hop releases, the likes of Killer Mike and El-P hold up and actually standout.  I’ve listened to the album on repeat for a day now and that wasn’t just for research purposes.  There’s something about El-P’s beats that makes me feel like I’m doing some bad ass shit no matter what’s going on.  Walking to the subway–like a boss, walking to work in the morning–like a boss, walking to the grocery store to get some greek yogurt for breakfast–still like a boss.  That’s how this album makes me feel. This isn’t the post modern sound of Yeezus that lends itself to being talked about, more than being listened to (which I’m still debating in my head whether that’s a good or bad thing).  No, this is the dying breed of hip hop that still gets you amped and possibly angry for no reason.  Remember when we used to get angry for no reason.  Man I miss the 2000′s.  But all that still sells this album short.  Cause it’s much more.

If you listened to El-P’s Cancer 4 Cure you now know that along with awesome instrumentals that balance on old-school and modern sound, he also has something to say.  Add in Killer Mike on El-P production which is one of the best fits in the industry and it makes for a great album.  Run the Jewels isn’t quite conscious rap, or whatever that phase was, but it’s definitely not all rims, bling, and hoes.  Masked behind the catchy beats and unassuming flow are some astute observations that may take a few listens to catch. Also El-P and Killer Mike take some very good and accurate shots at the industry as a whole.  It’s 10 tracks make for a quick yet enjoyable listen through without getting too long in the teeth.  My advice would be to download this album, hop in a car, or get a zip car, find some open road and drive a little reckless (note: I don’t actually condone bad driving and everyone should be safe drivers of course…duh).

Oh also the song 36″ Chain will be featured on the Adult Swim Singles 2013 album.  Which looks to be a good compilation.

Score: 8/10

I know, I know, Yeezus only got a 7.  What gives.  Fact is Yeezus is good, and is a great talking point.  But I think whatever Kanye does next will make Yeezus a record you probably don’t play that often in the future.  It’s his 808s and Heartbreaks, and I look forward to his next MTDF.
