On the other hand, the people of Miami certainly know how to party. They are among the best in the country at it. It is a fun city that knows how to celebrate Championships. However, the fans do not live or die with their sports teams. Like you said in your essay, they have won other championships. Besides the Heat, they have seen the Dolphins win multiple Super Bowls and the Marlins win multiple World Series. Heat fans had no problem leaving early during last year’s NBA Finals Game 6 and missed the epic comeback you led. They also had no problem leaving Game 4 of this year’s Finals early instead of giving you the appreciation you deserve for the success you brought to their city during the last four seasons. While most people and I expected you to stay in Miami, that game definitely could have been your last game as a Heat player in Miami. As time has shown, it is the case. In addition, your departure will not be heartbreaking for the city of Miami. They will simply go enjoy the Nightlife, the beach, and the boats in Miami. For these reasons, I was happy when I heard you were returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers. When I subsequently read your essay, I was blown away. I was totally impressed. As much as your “Decision” television special was a public relations disaster and I completely hated you for it, your “Essay” is brilliant and I totally love you for writing it. It is heartfelt and well written.
First, I think it is great that you realized and proclaimed your affection for Northeastern Ohio. You have done a lot for the community and I applaud you for it. The fact that you want to do even more to revitalize and invest in your struggling home state is commendable. Ohio has hit some difficult times and can definitely use you. You appear completely genuine in declaring your appreciation for growing up in Ohio and want to raise your children there. I also applaud your thought that you want to inspire other Ohioans to return home to help rebuild your state and encourage them to start and raise a family there. It is a testament to your character that you understand the trying times that your home area faces today and you want to be part of the solution. Any critic that suggests that your intentions are not sincere is a fool. I mean no offense to the state of Ohio but there are few reasons to move to Ohio unless you grew up there. I am sure it is a lovely place but there are reasons that Cleveland does not attract big, time free agents. You did not go to the glamour of Los Angeles, the bright lights of New York City, or try to chase the best situation to try to win a Championship like you did when you decided to join Miami. As a result, it is obvious that you truly just want to go home. The reaction to your choice has been overwhelming. Like me, the general public loves that you are going home and trying to take care of unfinished business. While we felt obligated to root against you hard when you were in Miami, we feel free and happy to root for you in the future to bring a championship to Cleveland.
I also agree with your analogy likening your four years in Miami to most people going to college for four years. It is the perfect parallel. I learned a lot and grew immensely when I left home to attend college. I could not imagine my personal development without it. As we are the same age, I can relate to your analogy. We were both seniors in high school when your games were televised by ESPN. While you were already capturing the world’s attention with your basketball abilities and preparing for your career in the NBA, I was filling out college applications like any other ordinary person. I concede that part of my feelings towards at the time you were out of jealousy. I did not understand why the world was being handed to you or why you received so much hype despite never playing a minute in the NBA. At the time, I was hoping that you would get outclassed badly when you went up against NBA competition and had to go up against the best players, like Kobe Bryant or Tracy McGrady. However, you had the game to back everything up. You dominated from the very start of your career. I remember waiting in my dorm room in college for your first game against the Sacramento Kings. You came out playing like a star and you have only continued to get better as time has progressed. There is no question in my mind that you are a perfect basketball player. You have the ideal physique. You are 6’8”, as quick as point guard, as strong as a big man, and can jump out of the building. You score at a high efficiency, have great court vision and the unselfishness to make plays for your teammates, and added an accurate three point shot. I have also never seen defense played the way you have played it. You are able to shut down to point guards or outmuscle bigger opponents. There is nothing on the court you cannot do.
Despite your achievements on the court, I do not think you get enough credit for how you have conducted yourself off the court with professionalism and grace. I can admit that I have not appreciated this aspect of your career as much as I should have. You have dealt with unfair and unrealistic pressure, scrutiny, and expectations. Despite a few natural hiccups along the way (most notably the “Decision”); you have generally conducted yourself with class. I feel I have grown tremendously as a person over the last decade from my four years in college and seven years in the workforce. However, I know I cannot handle myself as well as you have over your NBA career. I would probably be completely arrogant and unlikeable if I lived your charmed life. As I reflect, I can respect that you have acted like a class act. Moreover, you have done it without the benefit of attending college first. For this reason, I love your metaphor suggesting Miami is your four years in college. At the time you decided to join the Heat in 2010, it is easy to forget that you were only 26 years old. It is very young and you obviously had a lot to learn. Even at our age now, we are still far from knowing it all and still have room to grow. I appreciate your candidness and humility in admitting that you needed to go to Miami to learn to be a Champion and grow as a person. There are a lot of things I learned by leaving home. You never left Ohio until 2010. I can relate to the need to leave home as a phase and step in your life.
In addition, you were very smart to not have another televised event. You definitely learned from the “Decision”. During that event, you appeared arrogant and narcissistic. You added fuel to the fire for basketball fans to root against you when you made your “not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven [championships]” proclamation after Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and you signed with the Miami Heat. It is a mistake you clearly did not want to make again. The essay format is a great idea. You get to clearly state your thoughts the way you want to without the risk of fumbling over your words like you could trying to speak during a live interview. Moreover, nothing can be taken out of context in an essay since a person needs to read the whole thing. Most importantly, it is very well written and thoughtful. It symbolizes your maturation as a person in the last four years. In addition to your brilliant words, your actions spoke even louder. I never thought your ego could allow you to return to Cleveland because of the scathing letter Dan Gilbert wrote about you. However, you both proved you are better men now and can forgive past mistakes. It is a great example for kids when you made the statement “Everybody makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes as well. Who am I to hold a grudge?”
I also think you made a wise basketball decision. The San Antonio Spurs completely exposed your Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Dwayne Wade is clearly one of the top 50 greatest NBA players of All-Time. However, that was the past and age is catching up to him. He is a smaller guard who plays a physical style of basketball. While he is bigger than Allen Iverson, there are similarities between the two. AI also started to significantly decline at Wade’s age. Wade and you are great friends and your friendship will continue. You have accomplished great things together but he is on the decline and the supporting cast is now non-existent. Consequently, I believe it was the right time for you to move on. While Cleveland may not be an immediate Championship caliber team, it has the young talent to develop into one. Kyrie Irving looks like the real deal and is already an All-Star player. With more improvement, there is no reason he cannot develop into the next Dwyane Wade soon. As you stated in your essay, you want to help develop him into a top point guard. With your tutelage, I know you can teach him how to win. You will also teach the other young players how to win. You mentioned Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters in your letter. Thompson is definitely a gifted big man who is almost averaging a double double. At worst, he will be a solid rebounder which you were missing in Miami. Waiters is a talented scorer. He had his difficulties meshing with the team last year but I am sure you will set him straight.
I know you did not mention Andrew Wiggins in your essay. I hope it is an oversight. I know there are some rumors that he will be traded for Kevin Love. Love is definitely a tremendously productive big man but do not be impatient with Wiggins. He looks special and is already an elite defender. He could be one of the next great superstars in the NBA. You can definitely mold him in your image. At some point, you will get older. It may be perfect for Irving and Wiggins to hit their prime and carry the brunt of the load for you in the future. Like Tim Duncan on the San Antonio Spurs, you can reduce your minutes in a few years and extend your great career. I know Love makes you a Championship contender immediately but I recommend not being shortsighted and remaining cognizant of the long run. It could definitely be a much more promising future with Wiggins. Of course, it would be perfect if the Cavs can acquire Love without trading Wiggins. Regardless, I think you made a great decision and the Cavs will have a solid championship window. Ironically, they would have never been in position to compile so much elite talent if you did not leave. Their struggles on the court put them in position to acquire all the draft picks at the top of the draft. The planets appear to have aligned perfectly for the Cavs and your return to Cleveland.

If you do win a championship for the Cavs, you will be more beloved by all basketball fans than you ever could have been winning 5, 6, or maybe even 7 championships with other teams.
