#tbt: Rock N’ Jock Sports

Clemens

I can never get enough sports.  I’m always trying to find more sports to watch when I can.  I even had a summer stint of watching sumo wrestling.  This was back when ESPN2 would show the alternative sports on Saturday mornings.  You’d have the strongman competition possibly some surfing and then definitely some sumo wrestling.  Honestly if sumo wrestling was still on TV I’d probably still be watching it.  Just like I’d still be watching the XFL too.  Anyways, tangent hole, must avoid it.  It’s all just to make my point more emphatic.  I want Rock N’ Jocks sports back.  For those who don’t remember or who weren’t really aware of their existence yet, RNJ sports was a wonderful past time of MTV.  At the time MTV was still very much about Music Videos, so anytime they would put a pause on their regularly scheduled broadcasting, our young eyes would most definitely perk up.  The movie awards, the music awards, and the Real World were worth taking note of as it was the only time MTV broke character and said, “hey, look at this”.  And three times a year around the championships of each respective sports, MTV would also host their RNJ basketball, baseball, and football game. If I’m not mistaken the Basketball came first.  And I know everyone remembers the true star of those games, MTV’s one and only prodigy, Dan Cortese.

Dan Cortese was a Real World star turned VJ.  No one could make the wicker basket that was placed 10 feet above the regular basketball hoop, swoosh like he could (for those who don’t know that was double points).  RNJ basketball was essentially NBA Jam done in real life minus the dunking.  MTV would get everyone that worked for them, some young actors and actresses, a few rock stars, and of course a couple of actual athletes to play in a semi competitive (because for some of the non athletes this was the only time to show off their athletic prowess moments in the games could become very competitive) “All-Star” like game.  Full of tricks and gimmicks such as the wicker basket above the hoop, and deep spots worth extra points.  It was everything Slamball never was.  MTV would eventually expand their way into football and baseball which had a very similar formula.  I still remember the year Nelly, with his one bandaid eye torched the competition in football.  He was the Lebron of RNJ sports. This is what I missed.  It was great to know Nelly was an athletic freak compared to nomies like Carson Daly. They have whole games on youtube.  I recommend watching it.

The Future

This is my plea to MTV to bring this back.  During the lulls of sports you always had the Rock n Jock events and want, no I need them back.  With the MTV Challenge they now have more talent than ever, just throw in a Bieber and a Kobe and you got something going there. This coupled with my plan to make the Challenge a more legitimate sport and honestly MTV could have something to show every month that would make me watch.  See, you turn the Challenge into a two seasons a year show, but also change the format that each year there’s a draft that sets the teams for both seasons.  This would allow for you to have a draft special about a month prior to the actual season. Hell you could even have a combine for the rookies, boom another hour special to air 90 times in one weekend.  Then in between each season you get back to hosting the Rock n Jock sporting events.  This is it.  This is how you become the greatest non sports, sporting channel. That’s all I want for christmas.

Bonus Wicker Basket Points (just in case you forgot who Dan Cortese was):
