THE SNL EXITS: PART 2

SNLWhenever I ask someone if they watch SNL, 90% of the time I get the same response “Yea, I used to watch it back when it was funny.” And I always feel like responding with a nice ‘go fuck yourself’ but I refrain, and I defend one of my favorite(and longest running) television shows.  Airing its first episode in 1975, SNL has made its way into our homes and has managed to stay there ever since. This past Saturday night was a huge moment for SNL, losing three (potentially four) of its greatest talents all at once. Since I have been watching, I don’t recall a season where more than one or two cast members have left. It marked a night of goodbyes including the much anticipated Stefon- Seth(Hader and Meyers) love saga along with Ian Rubbish (Armisen) performing live with some big names to support him along the way. I wasn’t sure if there would even be goodbyes considering three greats were leaving. It felt like the whole show should have been devoted to each of them separately and even still, that wouldn’t have been enough.  Kristen Wiig had one of the most emotional goodbyes to date, until Saturday. The final goodbyes were filled with tears of both sorrow and joy (myself included).  Seth Meyers landed “Late Night” so we will be fortunate enough to see his handsome face every night soon enough and as for Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, I’m sure they will be successful in whatever they do (let’s hope it’s a movie based on Stefon).

I’ve been hearing a lot of talk that the show is now going to go downhill and for you Debbie Downers I have a little insight for you; SNL will continue to get better regardless of what you think. After Belushi and Radner there was Sandler, Farley, and Spade followed by Ferrell and Shannon, and then Oteri, Sanz, and Fallon. Then we were deep into funny Women when we were able to watch Fey, Gasteyer, Rudolph, Dratch,  and Poehler all at once. The fun didn’t stop there because then we were brought an all-star cast when Armisen, Sudeikis, Hader, Meyers, Wiig, Samberg, and Forte combined forces to make some of the best episodes yet. So here I am assuring you that there will be a next Ferrell and a next Wiig so don’t give up just yet.

So what happens next for SNL?  Who is going to be the new ‘Weekend Update’ correspondent? Will Bill and Fred be replaced or will they keep the cast small? These are questions that I don’t have answers to, but I feel confident that next season will continue to be brilliantly funny.

My predictions for breakout stars for next season are as follows:

Kate McKinnon- A featured cast member who started getting more face time mid-season and really won the audience over with her spot-on Ellen DeGeneres impression.

Cecily Strong- Another featured player this season and also known as “the girl you wished you hadn’t started a conversation with at a party” has really made an impact already. As far as funny girl brunette goes, move over Nasim Pedrad because Cecily is coming in hot. I think there will be a lot more of her in seasons to come.

Taran Killam- This September will mark his third season on the show and I expect to see a lot more of him now that Armisen and Hader will be gone. Not only is he a great dancer, but he can also give killer Peirce Morgan and Michael Cera impressions.

Bobby Moynihan- He is practically a vet on the set now, but I predict we will start to see more and more of him in the upcoming seasons. Especially with his most recent contribution to this season with the Disney Channel parody “Aw Nuts! Moms a Ghost” Which was co-written by Strong.

Vanessa Bayer- She is best known for her Miley impression and has made her way out of the ‘featured’ pool and I think this season she wasn’t utilized as much as she could have been. Hopefully we will be seeing more of her.

So for you skeptics out there, sit tight  because it will only continue to get better.

  1. My only fear with Strong is that she seems to favor the dumb chick voice, it’s hard to tell her full range. Bayer seems to be a writers’ favorite as far as the ladies are concerned. And McKinnon seems to have the potential to be the next Kristen Wigg but without the stuff that bugged me about Wigg’s time on the show.
