The Return of Cory and Topanga

The Return of Cory and Topanga

I’ll be the first to admit that lately, I’ve been bitter about love. It annoys me. When I was in a relationship, I would make fun of the miserable single girls who always complained about wanting a boyfriend and now, I’m slowly turning into one of those whiny bitches. If you know me, you’re probably thinking “but you’ve always been a whiny bitch?” and you’re right, I have. I’m just saying that I’m now whiny about everything (including love). All of this remains true with the one exception to the rule; Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence. Cory and Topanga–the epitome of a perfect relationship. After a 13 year hiatus, Cory and Topanga will return to the boobtube with the continuation of their love story. This time however, there will be a child in the mix. Rumor has it that the child is a girl, hence the name of the show “Girl Meets World”.

There are so many questions I just can’t wait to have answered. Will they still be perfect? Will their daughter meet her very own “Cory”? Will Eric be there? Will Sean be there? Is Morgan still relevant? Was Morgan ever relevant? Is Mr. Feeny still alive? When I first read the news about the return of the couple we all grew to love, I couldn’t contain my excitement. However, the more I thought about it, the more I began to resent the idea of the return. If you’re around my age (that’s 25), you grew up with Cory and Topanga and went through their trials and tribulations with them. Looking back, I realize how unrealistic their love was/is. I know what you’re thinking and yes, I am aware that this is just a television show and it isn’t real BUT it made the audience(me) want to believe it was. Who didn’t want their very own Mr. Feeny guiding them through life while teaching valuable lessons every step of the way? Season after season, we watched Cory and Topanga grow from a first kiss to a college graduation proposal. I was young, but I knew that was the kind of love everyone had hoped for. Growing older and being in relationships only made me realize that these types of people don’t exist. And if they do exist, they are few and far between.

High school sweethearts are becoming a thing of the past. The only high school sweethearts I know of are my friends’ parents and I wouldn’t consider them to be “happily married”. In 1993, Cory and Topanga’s relationship was a lot more believable than it will be now. They are coming back after thirteen pivotal years in our society. So now, they are a loving couple with a child who have been together since before his voice cracked? It seems nearly impossible, but I’ll allow myself to believe it. In the end, they bring out the glimmer of hope I have for a successful relationship and at the very least, I’ll get to take a step back into my childhood.
